Starin' and Sippin': Visiting the Strahov Monastery and Brewery

Since I didn't get the chance to research the place before visiting, I was under the impression that I'd see a bunch of monks walking around in orange robes, enjoying beers., We concluded our afternoon with a tour of the miniature brewery, so tiny that our entire group could fit into the room.

Why Are These Students Smiling?

In addition to the Boboli Gardens, on-site lectures and visits include the 'English' monumental cemetery (where the poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Walter Savage Landor and Arthur Hugh Clough are buried) led by its curator; a visit to the Casa Guidi (home to the Brownings); and a special backstage tour of the libraries and archives of the British Institute of Florence (founded in 1917) led by its archivist., It is the perfect place to escape and it is clear it has provided people privacy throughout the centuries: the Medici family, characters in Woolson's “A Florentine Experiment,” and even tourists today., Walking out of the palace and into the gardens it almost seems as if you were taken back into time when the Medici family was still in control.

Getting Settled in Rome - My First Week

I mostly did the “touristic things”, but honestly, I feel like even if I was living here for my whole life I would still be mesmerized with the beauty of the Vatican (inside and outside), the vivid air of Piazza Navona, and how incredibly detailed the Trevi Fountain is!, I really like how there’s always a lot of people walking around everywhere at any time of the day, especially because it brings back memories from my hometown São Paulo, in Brazil.

Kraków: Where Our Eyes Opened The Widest

On Friday of our excursion, we were lucky enough to have walking tours of the city as a whole and the infamous Jewish Quarter., On a cold Saturday, we toured Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau, putting a somber visual to everything we had grown up reading about the Holocaust in school., It was haunting touring the grounds and walking through the horrible buildings that so many innocent people who were taken there called their home for a short period., When walking through some of the former gas chambers, it was hard to believe that something evil and horrific could have happened in human history.

For instance, we took a guided tour to the most visited site in all of Spain, the Alhambra, and a walking tour of both the Arabic neighborhood, the Albayzín, and the Gypsy neighborhood, the Sacromonte., When in Seville, we were able to see many touristic sights, such as the Plaza de España and Real Alcázar de Seville., Every day I find myself smiling as I'm walking down the street just because I am glad to call Granada home., As I appreciate the daily sights I see walking to class, the lively culture that surrounds me, and the beautiful sound of the Spanish language, I cannot fathom what life would be like if I did not choose to live abroad for the semester and experience this new way of life.
